Fish Cartoons
Weekly Cartoon Email #154
I’ve been submitting cartoons to the New Yorker for more than ten years; working with two editors, Bob Mankoff and Emma Allen.
Very occasionally, I will bug them for advice.
Early on, Bob ecouraged me to experiment a bit more with the format, which lead to my first triplet cartoon.
Some years later, a conversation with Emma helped me make the decision to add noses and ears to my characters. This was my first cartoon after the mutation.
Today, while drawing some fish,* I remembered something else Bob once told me: selling your first cartoon could be luck, selling the second shows it hasn’t run out—but it’s the third one that proves it wasn’t a fluke.
(At least, I think that’s what he said.)

*These are the fish I was drawing with my morning coffee.
As you know, I’ve been teasing my new book for several weeks. It will be out in the new year!
Here’s a fish related page to whet your appetite…
See you next time!
