Weirdo Update
When I started submitting cartoons to the New Yorker, my characters were a little weirder than they are now. Someone once described them as “noodle people” (see wormy, below).
Over the years, I’ve added noses and ears (see nosey).
This Christmas, I was given some lovely new pens. As I doodled with them, I saw my cartoon friends evolving again. Less exaggeration, more detail (see face man).
I’m not sure how much of this will stick, but it’s a reminder that experimenting with new tools is a great way to freshen up your process—and to try be open to change when it finds you.
