When I was a kid, perhaps nine years old, I spent most of my time on my bike (a Raleigh Super Grifter).
One warm summer’s day, while aboard my steed, I had a chance encounter with a large, flying stag beetle.
I swerved to avoid it, but still, it smacked into my elbow with a thud.
It seemed to want to knock me off my wheels—and certainly didn’t stop to apologize.
On it flew, perhaps to work, taking with it what remained of my childhood innocence.
